Vern Francis Scholarship

The Dr. Vern Francis Student Assistance Fund was created to honor Vern Francis, a former professor in the College of Business. Several years ago, Dr. Francis was injured while riding his bicycle. Since then, he has been a quadriplegic.

The purpose of the fund is to assist students with disabilities at the university. Students (graduate and undergraduate) can apply for up to $2,000 (per applicant).

Applications will be accepted twice a year: By July 15 for the Fall Semester and by December 15 for the Spring Semester.

Applications should be submitted to Jeff Taylor.  A committee will review and vote on each application. Students will be notified of their application acceptance (or denial) by August 31 and January 31, respectively. Medical proof of disability may be required. Funding will be distributed as available.

College vs. High School

If you received modifications in high school, you were covered under the IDEA (an educational act).  As a university student, you are covered under ADAAA (a civil rights act).  There are a few notable differences in the two laws.

- IDEA allows for modification of class material; ADAAA requires that the student fulfills the same assignment requirements as all other students

- IDEA focuses on assuring successful student learning; ADAAA is outcome neutral that ensures equal access but is not designed to guarantee student success

- IDEA allows the school to alter curriculum to meet the student's needs; ADAAA requires that eligible students have equal access to the same curriculum as other students. 

Potential Accommodations

- Note-taking assistance

- Extended time on in-class assignments, quizzes, and exams

- Distraction-reduced testing environment

- Priority seating assignment

- Test reader

- Test scribe

- Student may need to have written material read aloud or put into an accessible format

- Due to the nature of the student's disability. he/she may need to take breaks during class

- A sign language interpreter

- Captioned/subtitled videos

- Allowance of assistive devices in the classroom or on assignments and exams

Inappropriate Accommodations

- Reduction of assignments

- Allow a student to miss class

- Altering of course material

- Allowance of a student to turn in assignments late

- Altering of testing methods

- Providing options for students to not be penalized for spelling errors if this is an integral component of the course

- Affect the integrity of the course in any way
