University of Dallas Credit Card Policy

Over the last few years, the processing fees for credit and debit cards have been steadily increasing, primarily as a result of the costs associated with improving the security of credit card information. . Bank fees are becoming prohibitively expensive, which has resulted in many colleges and universities electing to no longer accept credit or debit cards for tuition and fees payments.

However, we recognize that many students and families appreciate the convenience of using a credit or debit card so the University has made the decision to continue accepting credit and debit cards for payments through CashNet, our online payment system, but we will be implementing some changes to our policies.

Effective November 17, 2009, the University will institute new credit and debit card policies: all credit card payments for tuition, fees and room/board will be subject to a 2.75% convenience fee. Also effective on November 17, 2009, we can no longer accept VISA (we will continue to accept cash, check, MasterCard, Discover or American Express).

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a convenience fee?

A convenience fee is a fee charged to a credit or debit card user by the credit card processor. All fees collected on credit card transactions are paid directly to the credit card processor.

Why are you charging a convenience fee?

In spite of the rising cost of credit and debit card processing fees, the University has elected to continue accepting credit and debit cards. The expense associated with processing credit and debit cards has been paid out of tuition and other revenue, which reduces the dollars available for academic programs and services for all students. Thus, a convenience used by just some students was being funded by all students. To be able to continue offering this convenience, the costs associated with processing credit and debit card payments will now be charged to the credit or debit card user.

How much is the convenience fee?

The convenience fee is 2.75% of the total payment amount. It will be charged to your credit or debit card when choosing the credit card payment option on CashNet. The fee is non-refundable, even if the payment is refunded.

What credit cards do you accept?

MasterCard, Discover and American Express. As of November 17, 2009, we can no longer accept VISA.

Can I still make payments by telephone or in person?

You can continue to pay by check or cash via mail or in person at the Business Office, but all credit or debit card payments must now be made through CashNet, our online payment system. Unlike paying by telephone or in person, CashNet offers 24-hour, 7-day-a-week access so you can make a payment when it is convenient for you. Beginning in November 2009, we will also offer another convenient way to pay in person. You will be able to make a payment online using a CashNet kiosk located outside of the Business Office before, during or after regular Business Office hours.

Can I still pay online without paying by credit card?

To avoid the convenience fee, you can make online payments directly from any checking or savings account using the eCheck (ACH). Simply enter the bank/financial institution routing and account number information at the time of your online payment (you may also opt to set up a monthly eCheck (ACH) draft if you select the payment plan option in CashNet).

Do I have to have a CashNet account to make a payment online?

No. We will offer a special CashNet log in where you can pay online without having a CashNet account. Simply enter the student's Banner ID number and last name to make an online payment to their account.

What are all of my payment options?

You can make a payment for your tuition, fees and room/board in the following ways:
In Person at the Business Office:
  • Cash
  • Check
Online through CashNet:
  • eCheck (ACH)
  • MasterCard, Discover or American Express (includes convenience fee)
By mail:
  • Check
With all payment options, you can pay your account balance in full or sign up for our payment plan (a $50 payment plan enrollment fee will be charged each semester you enroll in this option). For details on the payment plan, click here .

Will I be charged a convenience fee for items purchased at the bookstore, the cafeteria or the Rathskeller?

No. The convenience fee only applies to tuition, fees and room/board. The bookstore and food service locations have the flexibility to build these costs (bank fees and compliance costs) into their retail prices. Tuition, fees and room/board rates are set by the Board of Trustees; therefore a convenience used by just some students was being funded by all students.
