The Catholic University for Independent Thinkers
The School of Ministry and Department of Theology will sponsor The Dead Sea Scrolls
Fall Event Series on Friday, Sept. 28 – Saturday, Sept. 29. On Sept. 28, Mark Goodwin,
associate professor of theology and interim dean of the School of Ministry, and Andrew
Glicksman, assistant professor of theology, will deliver a lecture on the history
and significance of the scrolls from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Art History Auditorium.
On Sept. 29, Goodwin and Glicksman will lead a trip to the scroll exhibit, which is
currently on display at Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Among
the artifacts and scroll fragments are texts from Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy,
the Psalms, Isaiah, and Daniel, New Testament papyri and other ancient New Testament
manuscripts, as well as original objects from the 1950s excavations at Qumran.
According to the exhibit website, "Dead Sea Scrolls & the Bible: Ancient Artifacts,
Timeless Treasures is one of the largest and most comprehensive exhibitions of Dead
Sea Scroll fragments ever assembled, and the largest ever presented in Texas. The
exhibition includes 21 fragments of original Dead Sea Scrolls – at least 12 of which
have, until now, only been seen privately – along with other recognized fragments
and unique artifacts."
Buses will leave at 1 p.m. from Braniff Circle and will return to campus by 4 p.m.
Students, faculty and staff interested in attending should reserve their spot to visit
the scrolls by Monday, Sept. 24 at 3 p.m. Cost for the excursion is $10 for students
and $15 for faculty and staff. Reservations and payment should be made in cash to
Suzanne Alexander in the Department of Theology.
Alumni and Parent Weekend visitors interested in attending the event should contact
Dani Schumer at dschumer@udallas.edu in the School of Ministry.
