This fall, the Dr. Vern Francis Student Assistance Fund awarded its first five scholarships to UD students with disabilities. The five students—two College of Business (COB) graduate students, one COB undergraduate and two Constantin undergraduates—received scholarships totaling $4,500 for medical supplies, software and travel to see their physicians.
Students in all of UD's colleges are eligible to apply for this aid. The fund, which was started with the proceeds from last April's A Run to Remember 5K, honors Vern Francis, a former COB professor who is no longer able to teach after a severe accident.
The run was organized by students in COB Associate Professor Scott Wysong's Sports & Entertainment class.
"It is very rewarding to see the hard work from my students last spring pay off in the form of helping their fellow students," said Wysong.
Another class of MBA students are planning to hold the 2nd Annual Run to Remember in 2014. The inaugural run hosted 125 runners and raised $7,700 from donors, corporate sponsors and race fees.
