When philosophy major Michaela Sobrak-Seaton '13 (right) received the email informing her that she had been granted a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Germany for the 2013-2014 academic year, she was sitting in the Cap Bar at a table of friends.
"It took a while for it to sink in," she said. "I tried to refrain from dancing since I was in the middle of the Cap Bar."
Sobrak-Seaton, who previously studied abroad during the Sophomore Rome Program and at the Catholic University of Eichstätt (Germany), will spend next year teaching English at a German school.
"I'm still waiting to get my school assignment, but once there I will be assisting in classes, tutoring students individually and organizing extracurricular events," said Sobrak-Seaton.
Sobrak-Seaton's primary goal for her Fulbright year is to form personal connections between the U.S. and Germany.
"I hope to bring my German students an appreciation for the English language and to bring back to the U.S. a deeper understanding of German culture and language," she said.
Looking beyond her year as a Fulbright teaching assistant, Sobrak-Seaton is considering graduate school in either philosophy or German. After studying German for years and earning a concentration at UD, she is nearly fluent in German and hopes to be completely fluent by the end of her Fulbright year.
"It's an absolutely beautiful language," she said. "We're so steeped in the Romantic languages in the U.S. and as English speakers. Sometimes I think people don't give German enough credit for its complexity and precision."
