The Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation named Professor of Psychology Scott Churchill a 2014 Piper Professor May 1. The award, which annually honors 10 professors in Texas colleges and universities for outstanding achievement in the teaching profession, is widely regarded as the most prestigious of its kind in the state and comes with an honorarium.
Churchill has taught at UD for 35 years. In addition to having served as department chair and as founding director of its current graduate programs, he serves as a fellow and film critic at the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture and for the past three decades as film and performing arts critic for the Irving Community Television Network. Previously he has served as director of the University of Dallas Base Camp for the Jane Goodall Institute's Roots and Shoots educational initiative. During his time at UD he has taught more than 50 different upper-level courses and worked with hundreds of students.
He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Duquesne University. Churchill also serves as editor-in-chief of the academic journal The Humanistic Psychologist and as an elected council representative for the American Psychological Association.
"Taking classes with Dr. Churchill reminded me of why I became a psychology major, and his enthusiasm for the subject left me with the curiosity to learn more outside of class," said UD student Caroline Watanabe.
Churchill joins six other UD Piper professors, including University Professor Louise Cowan; Cherie Clodfelter, professor emerita of education; Frank Doe, associate professor of biology; Rich Olenick, professor of physics; Judy Kelly, professor emerita of drama, and Sr. Clodovia Lockett, emerita biology professor.
"I am so very honored - and humbled - to be in such distinguished company in receiving the 2014 Piper Professor award. Most of all, I wish to thank my students, past and present, who have always been my inspiration. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart," said Churchill.
