In advance of the canonization of Blessed John Paul II in Rome this April, Catholic thinkers John Allen (at right) and George Weigel will both visit UD to share their observations on the Second Vatican Council in the pontificates of John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
"We are excited to have these Catholic thinkers on our campus to speak about the two popes and how they have interpreted and advanced the agendas of the Second Vatican Council. This is a wonderful way of culminating UD's year-long reflections on the council and its 50th anniversary," said Mark Goodwin, dean of the School of Ministry and Theology Department chair.
Last fall, the university held five faculty panel discussions on the council, organized by Professor of Philosophy Robert Wood.
Allen, associate editor at the Boston Globe and previously a senior correspondent with the National Catholic Reporter, will speak at UD on April 8 at 6 p.m. in the Art History Auditorium.
Weigel, a distinguished senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center and biographer of the Blessed John Paul II, will deliver his lecture at 7:30 p.m. on April 11 in Lynch Auditorium. Weigel will return in May to address the University of Dallas Class of 2014 at Commencement.
A question and answer session and a book signing will follow both lectures. These events are hosted by the President's Office, the Department of Theology and the School of Ministry. More information is available here for Allen's talk and here for Weigel's talk.
