Verne Funk and Kenneth Baskin were announced the "Best in Show" winners of the 2013 Regional Juried Ceramic Competition at UD. Funk, of San Antonio, and Baskin, of Lake Charles, La., were invited to display solo exhibits in the Art History Building's Thompson Loggia in early 2014.
"This exhibit has established a national reputation for UD as a promoter of the best ceramic artists in the southwest. Many regional shows in the U.S. are now using the UD Regional Juried Ceramic Competition as a model to establish a sense of community among artists," said Dan Hammett, professor and chair of the Art Department.
The ceramics exhibition, which closes on March 1, is held in the university's Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery every two years and offers an opportunity for ceramic artists in an eight-state region to show their functional and sculptural work in North Texas. Event juror Les Manning, senior artist in residence at Medalta, a Canadian ceramics factory and national attraction, presided over the event. According to Manning, pieces that were chosen were well-crafted and "convincing enough to stand alone."
