With less than a week before Groundhog Day, a record 444 alumni − nearly four times the number attending Groundhog 2012 − have registered to attend the Groundhog 50th anniversary celebration in Irving on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. Recent graduates account for almost half of that number with 203 alumni attending from the classes of 2010 and 2011.
"The Alumni Office would like to send a special welcome across time and space to Groundhogs returning from as far back as 1976–the earliest class represented at Groundhog–and as far away as Alaska," said Joe Howe, alumni relations officer.
Since student registration opened last Friday, 400 students have registered to attend Party in the Park. In 2012, 1,100 students attended the event, and a similar number is expected this year. The university is preparing for 1,800 students and alumni to attend the evening parties.
Faculty and staff who are interested in attending are encouraged to purchase tickets soon. Groundhog t-shirts, which serve as admission to both the Party in the Park and the Party in the Rat and cost $30, will be sold until there are none left. Online registration will close at midnight on Friday, Feb. 1. If shirts still remain unsold on Saturday, they will be made available for purchase by cash or check only at the registration table, which will be in Haggar Foyer from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and by the Tower from 6:30-11 p.m.
More information on Groundhog events and registration is available on the alumni web site.
