UD to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Groundhog Day Tradition

GroundhogOn Feb. 2, UD will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Groundhog. In addition to a Groundhog Tour for alumni with events in 14 different cities (not counting Irving), current students and the Alumni Office have organized a day full of activities in Irving to which faculty and staff are cordially invited.

The day will begin with the 13th Annual Groundhog 5K at 9 a.m., followed by a Kegs 'n' Eggs breakfast and a multitude of sporting events, including a rugby game and a Powderpuff football game.

The evening's festivities include both a Groundhog Party in the Park and an Alumni Groundhog Party in the Rathskeller for those who would rather spend the evening warm and seated. Alumni can enjoy the Alumni Pre-Party in the Park with two hours in Groundhog Park before the students arrive. Admission is $30 and includes the shirt, which serves as an entrance ticket to both celebrations, and all-you-can-eat-and-drink at both the Rathskeller Party and the Party in the Park. The full schedule is available here.

"Alumni are traveling from all over to attend the 50th anniversary of our unique tradition," said Leah Looten, alumni relations officer. "We expect around 500 alumni to be on campus for the festivities. Not everybody shares the Rome experience, but everybody shares, in some way, the Groundhog experience."
