From the Desk of President Keefe

Dear Parents,

As we enter into this holiday season of joyful expectation culminating in the celebration of the birth of the Christ child, I am grateful for so many things. Not only do we, as Christians, celebrate the coming of our Savior, but here at the University of Dallas we have other things to be thankful for as well, including:

  • four consecutive years of enrollment records;
  • the extraordinary generosity of Satish and Yasmin Gupta's $12 million gift for a new College of Business building;
  • stellar medical and law school acceptance rates for pre-med and pre-law students that, at 80 and 90 percent, are significantly higher than the national averages of 44 and 60 percent, respectively;
  • a string of recommendations in highly-regarded college guides and publications.

Combined, these accomplishments are evidence that a University of Dallas degree is one of the finest in the nation.

But I am above all thankful for our students. With dedication and enthusiasm, they keep alive UD's mission of pursuing wisdom, truth and virtue as the proper and primary ends of education.

As winter overtakes us this holiday season, what a cheering thought that is: that these students, so brimming over with hope and spirit, will take from here not only a first-rate liberal arts education but also the name of an alma mater that can hold its own in the world.

In closing, I want to thank you, their parents, for all that you do to support your sons and daughters and the overall mission of the university. We could not do this without you, either.

Blessings to you and yours during the Advent and Christmas season,

Thomas W. Keefe, J.D.
President

Greetings!

December is here already and students are preparing for the last stretch of the semester and finals. Please remind your student to check into a variety of study sessions and study break opportunities on campus. Send some love to your Crusader during finals week with a Final Exam Package from Student Foundation for $25. The package includes healthy and fun goodies to keep their spirits up and their minds sharp. Deadline is today, so order one now at this link. Junior Alexa Turczynski shares some advice for dealing with the stress of finals. Students have to do the hard work, but we can remind them of some study tips:

  • Understand the test format. Cumulative, multiple choice, essay - knowing the test type will allow your student to study most effectively.
  • Study in a comfortable environment, free from distractions. Now is the time to find a favorite spot in the library or around campus to study.
  • Encourage your student to block off specific days and times to study for each test.
  • Many students find study groups a useful and fun way to prepare for exams.
  • It is not too late for students to take advantage of tutoring. Your student still has time to take advantage of these great tutoring services.

Students have received an email with important residence hall closing information. You can view a copy of the email HERE. In a few short weeks, students will be on Christmas break, and it is important to communicate with them regarding plans for their visit home. Students may have mixed emotions about leaving friends, relationships and their UD home. Do not take these emotions personally; it is normal behavior for students. Click HERE for a few tips that will ease the transition and ensure a happy holiday season.

The Office of Undergraduate Admission will be open for campus visits during the break. Click HERE to read more about upcoming visit opportunities for prospective students and their families.

We wish you every happiness this Holy Season and prosperity in the New Year! Thank you for trusting your precious children with the University of Dallas.

All the best to you and your family,

Valerie Landrum

Birds of a Feather...

Dr. Brown-Marsden's Ornithology class has been going on field trips weekly to the zoo and nature parks to study different types of bird species. Twenty biology students attended a full day at Southwestern Medical School, where they learned about medical school admissions, how to do well on the MCAT, financial aid, and other important aspects of a career in the health professions.

Money Matters

  • Initial spring semester statements have been uploaded to CASHNet, but it is not too late to submit a 2013-14 FAFSA.
  • All previous balances must be paid in full immediately.
  • Interterm semester payments are due by December 22, 2013. The Interterm semester cannot be paid with spring 2014 financial aid.
  • Spring Rome student payment arrangements are due by December 18, 2013.
  • Spring Irving student payment arrangements are due by January 6, 2014.
  • In preparation for the 2014-15 school year, the new FAFSA becomes available January 1, 2014, and should be filled out prior to March 1 to meet our priority deadline.

Rome Program

Unlike most study-abroad programs, the Rome Program offers students an opportunity to experience firsthand the roots of our faith and culture. Click HERE to read about Summer Rome Programs and deadlines for spring 2014 Romers.
