Happy New Year!

We are excited to welcome back your student for the spring semester!

With a new year and a new semester upon us, now is a great time for students to assess their progress thus far in the school year, and reflect and plan for the upcoming term. If students have goals they wish to achieve - whether academic, personal, physical or spiritual - the Office of Student Life can direct them to the appropriate resources available on campus.

I also encourage all students to check out the Student Activities and Leadership Center to learn more about all of the clubs and opportunities here on campus. It is never too late to get involved!

Service opportunities, both on and off campus, provide students a wonderful chance to learn and grow. Our Campus Ministry and Student Life offices offer a variety of ways that students can give back here on campus and all over the metroplex.

Perhaps your student's New Year's resolution is related to a change in academics. If so, I encourage a visit to the Academic Success Office or enrolling in a General Studies course to help polish academic skills. Dr. John Norris, Associate Provost, provides some great information in this letter.

DART pass decals issued in the fall have expired. Students will need to pick up new pass decals from the Campus Safety Office when they return to campus.

If your student has not received the flu shot, p
lease have your student go by the Student Health Clinic for a flu vaccine - it's free of charge if covered by insurance. The clinic is open each afternoon from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All insurance is accepted.

We hope all students enjoy the new semester. Our office is here for both students and parents who may have questions or concerns.

All the best to you and your family,

Valerie Landrum

Crusader Awakening Retreat

Happy New Year from the Office of Campus Ministry!

One of our biggest events of the year happens each March on the weekend following Spring Break. It is the Crusader Awakening Retreat, and it will take place March 21- 23. Our theme is “I am the Vine and you are the branches” from the Gospel of John.

This weekend will begin the third week of Lent and is a wonderful time to “awaken” and renew the presence of Jesus in our lives. The retreat usually brings over 100 college students together for prayer, sacraments, song and faith sharing. This is our sixth Awakening retreat, and our retreat team is very excited about the opportunity to pray and share their faith with their peers.

Our UD chaplain, as well as other priests, will be on hand for confession on Friday evening and Mass each day of the retreat. Please encourage your student to look for the sign-ups in Haggar University Center for this wonderful weekend. The price of the retreat is $50.00 and includes room, board, a t-shirt and a weekend of great spiritual renewal. We hope to have your student with us.

Physics News

Three UD physics majors presented their summer research results at the Texas Sectional Meeting of the American Physical Society in October 2013. Seniors Elizabeth Sizemore and Jack Bredemann discussed "Methodologies for Analyzing Motion Data in Humans" and "Using RPC Data to Assist CSC Data when Dealing with Pt Assignment," respectively, while junior Samuel Henderson presented "Studies of Neutron Scattering off 54Fe with Monoenergetic Neutrons at 3 and 4 MeV."

Rome Program

Unlike most study-abroad programs, the Rome Program offers students an opportunity to experience firsthand the roots of our faith and culture. Information for the Summer Rome Programs, spring 2014 Rome semester and prospective Romers can be found HERE.

Complete information about the Rome Program can be found HERE.

Office of Undergraduate Admission

The Office of Undergraduate Admission is open for campus visits during the winter break!

We are currently accepting applications for the 2014-2015 academic year. If you know any high school seniors who would benefit from our Core curriculum, our Rome semester or our tight-knit community, encourage them to complete their application soon! Our regular admission deadline and Priority Financial Aid Deadline is March 1, after which our need-based aid is given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. This means that the FAFSA must be complete by March 1. We look forward to an exciting class of 2018!

If you have a high school junior, consider bringing them to visit campus for our upcoming Crusader Preview Day. This visit program is exclusively for high school juniors, and will take place on Monday, February 17, 2014. This is also President’s Day, so our hope is that students are able to make good use of their day off from school by making a college visit! Take advantage of this opportunity to experience UD and find out what it is like to be a Crusader. All high school juniors and their parents are welcome! To register for Crusader Preview Day or a personalized visit during the spring semester, please visit our website at udallas.edu/visit.
