The Rome Academic Award

As part of the end-of-semester Convocation Ceremonies, the UD Rome Faculty awarded the Academic Award to Mary Shuhriemen. Dean of the Rome Campus, Peter Hatlie, honored Mary's Achievement with this address to the student body, faculty, and staff:

The motto of the University of Dallas is Veritatem Justitiam Diligite-Cherish Truth and Embrace Justice. Where you can find enough people to follow such principles in one place and in one time, one can certainly expect a successful enterprise-be it the activities of a country, a city, a university, or even a Rome program. Accordingly, when we in the Rome faculty see the values of truth and justice materialize in our students, our work suddenly gets lighter and more meaningful. We find new hope and direction the more we have such individuals in our classes.

So it will perhaps come as no surprise that every semester, we take a moment to honor that student (or those students) who are well on the road to embracing these important ideas. A student's disposition to justice and other admirable personal qualities may be more difficult to discern in the very temporary setting we now find ourselves in. For the love of truth, on the other hand, there do seem to be several standards by which we can measure progress: good study habits; academic leadership in and out of the classroom; thoughtful and and mature and rigorous academic work across of the curriculum; and a commitment to the liberal arts education.

We give an award to who have demonstrated these qualities. As many as fifteen of you this semester were candidates for what is both an honour to you and a confirmation of the continued success of the UD Rome program . In the end, the faculty found one most worthy of the award. With warm congratulations, therefore, let me announce that this year's Academic Award goes to a single indivdual Ms. Mary Shuhriemen.

Congratulations Mary!
