UD Students Hear Lecture on Free-Lancing and Blogging

The world of blogs has experienced an explosion in just a few short years; though there were fewer than 1000 prior to the turn of the millennium, no one can possibly count the number today. UD Rome students learned about this world and possibilities for self-publication on Tuesday, March 11, when the UD Rome campus hosted free-lance writer and Marino resident Rebecca Helm-Ropelato, who spoke on "Free-Lancing and Blogs: A Happy Marriage." Helm-Ropelato, who early in her career wrote for several California newspapers, told the students of this growing world and her own experiences with her blog, www.foreignremarks.com, where she has written about the birthplace of gorgonzola, the Italian literary theorist and novelist Umberto Eco, and the name (in either English or Italian!) for the piece of your glasses that goes behind your ear. Her pieces have been picked up by he likes of The Christian Science Monitor and USA Today. Helm-Ropelato's talk moved from the "nuts and bolts" of writing query letters all the way to inspiring the students to strike out and find their own voices by joining this new world.
