The John Paul II lecture, which began in 2007 and is made possible by anonymous donors, is designed to promote theological enterprises modeled on the work of St. John Paul II. Past lecturers have included Cardinal Francis Arinze in 2008, Guy Mansini, OSB, in 2010 and John McDermott in 2012.
The 3rd Annual John Paul II Theology Lecture, “Three Kinds of Personalism: Kant, Scheler, and Pope John Paul II: Philosophical Underpinnings of The Theology of the Body,” was held with featured speaker Dr. Michael Waldstein ‘81 (Braniff), internationally renowned theologian and translator of John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.
“Dr. Waldstein is one of the foremost Catholic theologians in America,” said Dr. Christopher Malloy, associate professor of theology at the University of Dallas. “He exemplifies the good scribe that works from the best of ‘what is new and what is old’ so that theology can move forward fruitfully. Illustrating this virtue, his exposition of the philosophical underpinnings of John Paul’s Theology of the Body - which is progressive and traditional at once - is lucid and brilliant.”
Dr. Waldstein is the Max Seckler Professor of Theology at Ave Maria University. He previously served as founding president of the International Theological Institute in Gaming, Austria, and was the St. Francis of Assisi Professor of New Testament there.
He is a member of the Pontifical Council for the Family and is a Distinguished Fellow of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. His published works include his definitive translation of John Paull II’s Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body, “The Common Good in St. Thomas and John Paul II” (Nova et Vetera), and “Dietrich von Hildebrand and St. Thomas Aquinas on Goodness and Happiness” (Nova et Vetera).
He holds a bachelor’s degree from Thomas Aquinas College in California, a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Dallas, an S.S.L. from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, and a Th.D. in New Testament from Harvard Divinity School.
Previous John Paul II Lecturers have featured Francis Cardinal Arinze and Dr. Russell Hittinger.
The 7th John Paul II Lecture, “Marriage as a Natural Sacrament,” will take place this September and will feature D.C. Schindler, Ph.D., associate professor of metaphysics and anthropology at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family at The Catholic University of America.
