United in celebration with the Southern Dominican Province on the occasion of their
800th anniversary, the 18th Annual Landregan Lecture will feature three extraordinary
individuals: Father Bruno Cadoré, O.P., master of the Order of Preachers; Father Gustavo
Gutiérrez, O.P., a noted theologian widely known as the "father of liberation theology";
and Dr. Paul Farmer, an internationally recognized humanitarian physician and the
co-founder of Partners in Health. The program will be moderated by Sister Barbara
Reid, O.P., vice president and academic dean at the Catholic Theological Union.
The panel discussion will be based on the best-selling book In the Company of the Poor, which was co-authored by Farmer and Gutiérrez with a preface by Cadoré. The event will take place at the DFW Airport Marriott Hotel on Friday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m.
In the Company of the Poor reflects the coming together of Farmer and Gutiérrez in the preferential option for the poor, their defense of life and their commitment to liberation. This book, through its focus on Farmer’s efforts in social justice medicine and on Gutiérrez’s liberation theology, bears witness to the impact that theology can have outside the church.
According to Catholic Books Review 2014, "The book is intended for a wide audience: theologians and medical professionals, persons working with oppressed and marginalized people, and 'as a resource for students of medicine, public health, anthropology, political science, philosophy, theology, community developments and economics as they prepare for their own life's work.’ And it can serve as a hope-filled resource for anyone seeking a faith that does justice. In Dr. Paul Farmer's words, 'It is always the time of cholera somewhere in our world.'"
Farmer, Gutiérrez and Cadoré all have dedicated significant time to the service of the world’s most vulnerable.
“Working in this world and becoming familiar with it, I came to realize, together with others, the first thing to do is listen,” Gutiérrez wrote in 2009 of his experience with the poor.
The Landregan Lecture will afford many such an opportunity to listen to this important message.
The Landregan Lecture brings to the University of Dallas campus nationally prominent figures, whose area of expertise reflects the many interests that have animated University of Dallas alumnus Steven T. Landregan throughout his long, distinguished and continuing career of service to the Catholic Church in North Texas as archivist, author, and former editor of the Texas Catholic.
All are welcome to join the greater University of Dallas community at the 18th Annual Landregan Lecture.
