+ Read MoreProfessor Sweeney is an expert on medieval philosophy, with an emphasis on the thought of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. She has written three books and about thirty articles on medieval philosophers, especially St. Anselm and St. Thomas Aquinas.
The title of her lecture is: “Aquinas as Ecstatic Aristotelian: Literary Reflections on the Summa theologiae.”
The lecture will explore the ways in which Aristotelian and biblical authorities are deployed and intertwined in the Summa, stretching, sometimes beyond the breaking point, the Aristotelian notions which function as the primary vehicle of explanation of the notions of will, passion, and virtue.
The public lecture will be held in Lynch Auditorium on Thursday, January 28, at 7:30PM with a reception to follow. An informal student discussion will be held Friday, January 29, at 10:00AM in Upstairs Haggar and a graduate seminar on Friday, January 29, at 2:00PM in the Gorman Faculty Lounge.
