The Seminar on Law and Ethics is a three-part program designed to educate attorneys on the application of legal ethics and legal professional responsibility through discussion of a text that raises issues applicable to the legal profession. This program is designed for participants to meet once a month over the course of three months.
Each month there is a one hour session in which various questions of legal ethics and legal professional responsibility are discussed in the context of a guided reading of a particular text. Each session includes a discussion of applicable rules and concepts of professional conduct necessary to maintaining the integrity and competence of the Bar and training lawyers in the skills and concepts that promote or assist them in the delivery of high quality legal services to clients. The seminar will discuss Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice.

Session 1: Ethics in Contract Negotiation
The first session focuses on the legal ethics issues that arise from a consideration
of Act I of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, in which Antonio and Shylock enter into a loan agreement with a pound of Antonio’s
flesh serving as the moneylender’s security in case of default.
Session 2: Ethics in Contract Performance
The second session focuses on legal ethics issues that arise from a consideration
of Acts II and III of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, in which Portia and her various suitors fulfill their respective roles in the performance
of condition precedent for her marriage and in which Shylock makes clear his intention
to demand payment of the pound of flesh since Antonio has defaulted on the loan.
Session 3: Equity and Law in Contract Disputes
The third session focuses on legal ethics that arise from a consideration of Acts
IV and V of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, in which Shylock seeks legal enforcement of Antonio’s defaulted bond and Portia
brings criminal charges against Shylock for seeking Antonio’s death.
