The Importance of Accompaniment when Walking the Faith Together

Based upon the ancient Hebrew practice of apprenticeship, faith accompaniment (also known as coaching or mentoring) assigns a coach to a neophyte to walk alongside in their faith journey. It is Pope Francis’ principle of graduality – taking a person where they are at in their faith and drawing them toward the ideal. Accompaniment permits and assists people to take one step at a time toward holiness, with their own personal coach who models, affirms and challenges the neophyte. Accompaniment can be used in a myriad of ways: accompanying parents/couples through the baptismal or marriage process and the first few years of parenthood/married life; accompanying new parish members through one liturgical year. The possibilities are endless. In this workshop participants will learn the key principles of faith accompaniment and why it is one way of living the great commission Matthew 28:19.

Where's Waldo? Where's Confirmation?

Just as Waldo looks the same wherever he lands, the theology of the Sacrament of Confirmation remains the same wherever it is placed. The Sacrament of Confirmation is directly connected to our baptism in that it seals our baptism. Regardless of where the sacrament is placed (RCIA, youth, children, young adults) the sacramental theology remains – bringing an increase and deepening of baptismal grace, rooting us more deeply as children of the Father, uniting us to Christ, increasing the gifts of the Spirit, rendering a perfect with the Church all for the purpose of becoming a witness to Christ and confessing the name of Christ boldly (CCC1303.) Participants in this workshop will explore the teachings of the Church on the Sacrament of Confirmation through the catechism and the rite itself.

The interaction models between science and religion range from integration to independence and even conflict. Dr. Catlett will discuss the writings of Father George LeMaitre and Pope St. John Paul II as examples of constructive dialogue between science and religion using the development of the Big Bang theory as an example.

Christ the Master-Teacher: 12 Ways to Become a Better Religious Educator

"You call me 'teacher' and 'master' and rightly so, for indeed I am" (Jn 13:13). Christ is the model for all religion teachers and catechists. He was called both master (leader) and teacher by his disciples and showed them the way to follow in his footsteps. To become better leaders, we have to become better servants. To become better teachers, we have to become better disciples. With twelve exercises and meditations from the book, 31 Days to Becoming a Better Religious Educator, participants will take steps to becoming better disciples, servants, leaders, and teachers. This workshop is more than a professional development opportunity, it is an invitation to enter into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, our master-teacher, in order to become better witnesses of his life and teachings.

Heart of a Survivor – The Role Empathy Plays in Healing the Trauma of Abuse

This session addresses the realization that there is a lack of empathy in our family and greater communities for abuse survivors who are struggling to overcome the abuse and trying to live and thrive in ‘normal’ lives. Abuse has no prejudice to class or race, and it is important to recognize and empathize the healing journey our family, friends, cow-workers, students and neighbors might be going through. This program will bring the awareness to this crisis situation with the intent to make a change. As a teacher, lay leader, minister, family or friend, discover what can you do to help the abused.

The Liturgical Origins of the Gospels

We know that the books of the New Testament are inspired by God, but how were they written? This talk will focus on what we know about the formation of the Gospels, starting with the oral preaching about the deeds and words of Jesus which probably took place at the Sunday Eucharistic meals. The talk will also highlight some fascinating connections between the form of the Synoptic Gospel stories and the liturgical setting of the early Church believers. The goal of this presentation is twofold: to reveal how the faith of the early Church led to the creation of the Gospel texts, and to show how our link to the earthly Jesus through the Scriptures still occurs in the Eucharistic meal.

The Joy of Love: Pope Francis' Love Letter to the Church

Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation, "Amoris Laetitia" ("The Joy of Love"), has been the subject of debate and “mixed reviews.” On the one hand, it has been described as a love letter inviting all of us, and especially married couples and families, to never stop growing in love; a call to the Church to realize more and more her mission to live and love as a family. On the other hand, some have expressed disappointment not so much in what Francis says, but in what he doesn’t say. The focus of this session is twofold: the unambiguous statements of Pope Francis regarding marriage, sexuality, and family, and the pope’s expressed desire that the Church’s ministers reach out in mercy and compassion to those who struggle to incarnate those truths in their lives.

The challenges, and opportunities, to witness to the faith in American history may profitablty include the storeies of such as John Carroll, the first American Catholid bishop (1789-1815) in a new republic with a traditional hostility to Catholicism; Orestes Brownson, a celebrated convert, and forceful apologist an author in the mid-19th century; Sr. Blandina Segale, an immigrant and colorful missionary in late 19th and early 20th century New Mexico; Daniel Rudd, a black Catholicm editor, and leader in the late 19th-century Black Catholic Congesses; and Dororthy Dday, co-founder of the Catholic Worker, prolific author and persistent social activist in the 20th century. In their own ways, and in their own times, each gave substance to St. Paul's call to evangelization of the American culture.

Relationship Advice from Pope Francis: Reflection on "The Joy of Love"

Pope Francis has done it again with his latest document, "The Joy of Love." The heart of his insight about Catholic life is that it is always grounded in relationship. This presentation unpacks the new document in light of some of the key relationships which constitute our lives -- family, friendship, marriage, colleagueship, and, most of all, discipleship. Takeaways will include a deeper insight into Pope Francis' vision of love and practical implications for living the extraordinary love of Christ in the midst of ordinary life.

If Attraction Were Liquor, We'd All Have a Buzz

Attraction is a strong emotion. When drawn to a beautiful person, you can certainly feel inebriated. And when that attraction is topped off with desire, then now you’re definitely ‘under the influence’! So how do you know if it is love or something else? Love is complex. Everybody seeks it. But what if the complexity could be simplified, and counterfeits could be easily revealed? From a biblical perspective, Tom McCabe uses pop culture, the arts and humor to discuss what attracts us and what sustains lasting love. With relate-ability and refreshing insights Tom unveils attraction, desire and love to reveal their inherent good!

Christianity and Science

This presentation will explore the thought of the Catholic theologian, John Haught, who has developed a theology of nature that sees the discoveries of modern physics and biology as making essential and positive contributions to traditional theological issues such as creation, the origin of human nature, the future of the cosmos and resurrection. Haught’s thought provoking perspective affirms core values of our faith tradition but also shows how these values must be understood and interpreted in light of contemporary science. He makes helpful distinctions between science and its expanding realm of knowledge on one hand, which serves faith, and materialistic naturalism which sees no role for the divine. We will examine how science, understood rightly, is an ally of faith and is assisting the church in seeing traditional categories of belief with greater authenticity and relevance in the twenty-first century.

Invite, Encounter, Relate: A Model of Classroom (or any place) Evangelization

Many classrooms could be classified as “hostile work environments.” It is a room filled with people that don't necessarily want to be there who will lie, cheat, not listen, disrespect you and others, put forth minimal effort, and even sleep while you attempt to do your job. What must we do to break past the “teacher-student” barrier and reach a place where Truth is not only shared, but fallen in love with and then actively lived? We must think of ourselves less as “teachers” and more as “classroom evangelizers” who have the chance to invite students to meet Jesus, provide opportunities for meaningful encounters with Him, and then build relationships with them as they build a relationship with Christ.

Finding Balance: Saying ‘Yes’ to Yourself

Ministry is messy and can take a lot of time, energy, and effort. It can require you saying “yes” to thousands of tasks, none of which seemed to be initially listed in the job description. To endure the long haul, you have to find balance between the personal and professional. But so many ministers struggle to say “no” because they don't want to let people down or they believe they're the only one that can effectively make something happen. So, learn to say “yes” to the balance you need. Learn what to embrace and where to create boundaries. Identify the areas you need to find balance in, and learn how to prune the fruit.

The Myths of Forgiveness

Forgiveness is fundamental to our faith tradition as Catholic's. Jesus's focus on forgiveness and mercy was pivotal to his mission and message. The inability to forgive or be forgiven impacts our whole being and quality of life. As apostles of Jesus today, we should reflect and act beyond the challenges of forgiveness in our own lives. There are many myths that we have either learned or misunderstood about forgiveness.

Ancient Faith for the Modern World

The Apostles' Creed is the most ancient statement of the Christian faith still in regular use in the church today. Children are taught to memorize it; anyone who prays the Rosary says it at the beginning of each set of mysteries, and it remains one of the basic prayers in the Catholic canon. Yet where did it come from, what does it actually mean, and why are we called to believe it? Does He know what’s happening, and does He care?” Maybe you deeply long to walk more closely with Christ and feel His tender touch—yet you wonder, “Have the mistakes of my past made this impossible?” If your answer is, “Yes!” this encounter filled with encouragement, inspiration, insight and laughter is tailor-made for you. Hear faith-filled, powerful stories that offer a fresh perspective to life’s disappointments, challenges and even tragedies. If you yearn for that sweet taste of grace, come sense God at work despite your circumstances, and leave with the assurance that you are NOT alone. (Optional small group exercise may complete this session.)

Taking the Bitter with the Sweet…Finding Peace in the Family

Family life is hard work, agreed? So how do you stay the course (when you'd rather toss in the towel)? How do you pass on your faith to kids who just roll their eyes? And what do you do after reading stacks of books on creating bonds and boundaries but still need a miracle? The good news—God is in the miracle business. Parents can count on (and receive) Divine guidance; the trick is knowing how to listen and recognize Counsel when it comes. Learn “Three Things” every child needs to hear from both parents to develop a Godly self-image, and hear a true story about the steps and missteps that brought a fractured family together. Simultaneously humorous and heartbreaking, this session offers hope-filled insights through one family’s journey from chaos to peace. See how God helped them achieve the greatest family blessing…harmony. And it happened through a chastity lesson.

"Sins Against Our Sexuality"

Co-presenting with Sheree Havlik

Come hear about the topics that no one wants to talk about, yet they are real – and happening to our youth. Specifically: rape, incest, pornography and homosexuality. Hear what the Church says about these sins; the symptoms a victimized young person might portray; and what you can do. Anyone involved with youth should be prepared to address them when they arise. Someone who has been a victim may act out in ways that we just call “bad behavior.” In reality they are crying out for help. The Church is not silent on these difficult topics and neither should we.

Canon Law and Marriage including the recent changes to the process of annulments

The institution of marriage, by which a man and a woman become one in a partnership of the whole of life, was established by God. Moreover, the marriage covenant between two baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament. Sadly, many marriages are not successful in spite of good intentions of the spouses. There are many misconceptions about what a declaration of nullity in the Catholic Church actually is. The following seminar is an attempt to answer the most frequently asked questions about marriage and a declaration of nullity including the Pope Francis’ reformed and simplified procedure for the declaration of nullity of marriages. The author will offer an analysis of this new procedures and guide the audience through the brand new processus brevior.
