UD Students Travel to Austin, Support Tuition Equalization Grant

On Wednesday, Feb. 27, UD students Christina Barsoum, Megan Best, Monica Dominguez and Katherine McFall, as well as administrators John Plotts, vice president of enrollment and student affairs, and Taryn Anderson, director of financial aid, travelled to Austin, Texas, to meet with Texas state legislators in support of the Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG). The state program provides grants to enable eligible Texas residents to attend private, non-profit universities in Texas.

"TEG dispersed over $1.2 million in support to 309 UD graduate and undergraduate students for the 2012-2013 school year alone," said Plotts. "We're grateful to the legislature for providing this grant, which helps make attending private colleges and universities more affordable for thousands of students in Texas."

The four students from UD joined more than 150 college students from other Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT) schools that receive the TEG. The UD contingent met with State Representative and University Trustee Tan Parker '93 and State Representative Linda Harper Brown to urge for their continued support.

"Visiting the capitol opened my eyes to how much goes into supporting Texas higher education. I'm glad the state provides support for students who don't attend a public college or university," said Best.
