Community Culture, Healthy Relationships the Focus of Campus Social Justice Initiative

The Office of Student Affairs kicked off the spring semester with a month of programming devoted to "living our commitment to social justice." The initiative, "I am my Brothers' and Sisters' Keeper," features everything from hashtags to movie viewings and discussion to lectures on Shakespeareall focused on raising awareness among students of their individual responsibility to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.

The event also includes programming centered on bystander intervention and healthy relationships. Presentations and movie viewings will focus on the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships.

Random Acts of Crusader Kindness Week, during which students will be challenged each day to "pay forward" a kind act to other members of the UD community, begins on Monday, Feb. 10.

"One of the things I think would be nice to see after this month is people making more of a conscious effort to do little things--like helping someone haul trash out to the dumpster," said Karen Bless, BA '15, a resident assistant and volunteer for the initiative.

"We encourage students to do good deeds for each other without expecting anything in return," said Valerie Landrum, assistant director of student and parent services. "You can share your stories on Twitter at #udpif."

"We hope to do this year after year," said Landrum.
