Kiplinger's Personal Finance: UD A Best Value
December 17, 2015
Finance magazine has included UD on its list of the country's best value liberal arts colleges for 2016. The publication's annual list, which was released Wednesday, Dec. 16, ranks 300 public, private and liberal arts colleges and universities that provide high-quality academics at a reasonable cost. This is the university's fourth consecutive year to be ranked by Kiplinger's.

U.S. News & World Report's 2015 rankings of the nation's best colleges are out and the University of Dallas is the highest ranked Catholic Best Value School in Texas. The Best Value ranking takes into account both the academic quality of the institution and the average amount of need-based aid provided to students.

New Adult Formation Course to Focus on 2nd Thousand Years of Christianity

The University of Dallas School of Ministry will offer a new continuing education course titled "Christianity in the Second Thousand Years: The Development of the Thought and Practice of Our Faith" beginning this fall. This noncredit course will be offered at three sites: the University of Dallas campus in Irving, All Saints Catholic Community in Dallas and St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Lewisville, with the class at each site meeting once a week for two hours.

New member of the UD Class of 2019 and aspiring philosophy major Thomas Hogan is, in true UD fashion, considering a concentration in either classics or mathematics. He visited UD during Odyssey Days last year and approved of his discovery that the Classics Department focuses on classical languages rather than classical literature -- because the entire undergraduate curriculum revolves around studying the literature.

North Texas Giving Day Champs Once Again

At the end of North Texas Giving Day on Sept. 17, UD was in the lead for largest number of donors of any local college or university. Nearly 400 alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends of the university came out in support of UD, donating an initial total of $106,956 before bonus funds.

Mathematics Department to Offer Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

Record-Breaking Freshman Class Arrives on Campus, Begins 2015-16 Academic Year

The university’s record-breaking freshman class of approximately 400 students moved in Friday, Aug. 21. Orientation leaders greeted the students with handmade signs and passed out Popsicles as the relatively mild (for Dallas in August) summer day heated up. Princeton Review Names UD a ‘Best College,’ Rome Program 3rd Most Popular

The University of Dallas was again named one of the nation’s best colleges in the 2015 edition of The Princeton Review’s “The Best 380 Colleges.” The university’s Rome Program was also recognized as being the third most popular study abroad program, an increase from last year’s ranking as the eighth most popular study abroad program.

New Classics Graduate Program Tailored for Future Doctoral Students, Teachers

The University of Dallas Classics Department is now offering two new graduate degrees in Latin and ancient Greek studies—a Master of Arts in Classics and a Master of Classics. Both degrees are tailored toward students who seek to enter a doctoral program in classics or those who teach the classical languages at either the primary or secondary level.

High School Summer Romers Visit Irving Campus en Route to Rome

High school summer Rome students made a stop at the Irving campus before becoming “Romers” this summer. Program participants kicked off Shakespeare in Italy and Latin in Rome with a day in Texas touring the campus, meeting faculty, chatting with admission counselors in the Cap Bar and viewing and discussing the movie “Julius Caesar.” They flew to Rome Thursday, July 9.

UD Hosts TexPREP for High School Students Interested in STEM Careers

For the second year in a row, UD is hosting the Texas Pre-Freshman Engineering Program (TexPREP), which was founded in 1976 by a mathematics professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Students may participate in the program for up to four years (from the summer prior to seventh grade through the summer prior to their sophomore year of high school). North Lake College offers Years I and II of the program; last year, UD offered Year III, and this year, additionally, UD is one of only two locations in the Dallas area to offer Year IV (the other is the University of North Texas’ Dallas campus).

Rising-senior Zachary Clark, 21 years old, died on Friday as a result of a car accident. Clark, who lived in the Dallas area, was on his way back to Minnesota, where he was working as a Totus Tuus Ministry missionary.

The university has named Jonathan J. Sanford dean of the Constantin College of Liberal Arts, the university’s undergraduate college of liberal arts and sciences. A nationally recognized ethics scholar, Sanford previously served as associate vice president for academic affairs and professor of philosophy at Franciscan University of Steubenville (FUS). He will begin his new role on Aug. 17.

Renowned art historian and Duke University A. M. Cogan Professor of Art and Art History Caroline Bruzelius will visit the University of Dallas as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Society Visiting Scholar Series April 16-17. As part of the visit, Bruzelius will deliver a public lecture on “Building on the Inquisition: How Poor Friars Paid for Expensive Churches in the Middle Ages,” Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in the Art History Auditorium on the University of Dallas campus. On Friday, April 17, she will speak on “The Cathedral and the City” at the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas. Both lectures are free and open to the public.

Students Found Journal of Science to Promote Undergraduate Research

The Journal of Science, founded in 2014, publishes research papers by University of Dallas undergraduates in the areas of psychology, economics, physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology. The journal publishes two issues a year and is organized and maintained by students, with the assistance of faculty advisors. This semester’s issue was the first to be distributed in hard copy form, but two previous issues were published electronically.

Church of the Incarnation Recognized for Enduring Architectural Design

The American Institute of Architects Dallas Chapter (AIA Dallas) has awarded the University of Dallas Church of the Incarnation the 2014 AIA Dallas Twenty-Five Year Award. Given annually to a work of enduring post-war architecture that is at least 25 years old, the award is the highest recognition for design bestowed by AIA Dallas.

Newhouse was selected based on his exceptional career, commitment to academics and work-life balance. His wife Nancy and children, Rodd, Reggie, Dawnyel and Shawntel, accepted the award on behalf of Newhouse, who passed away in July 2014.

Still-Growing UD Ministry Conference Moves to Larger Venue

The ninth annual University of Dallas Ministry Conference (UDMC), set for Oct. 22-24, will move to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas this year to accommodate its growing attendance. Here, FS turns his eye from new releases to classic films for the whole family. While some movies, Swietek warns, “will test the patience of the very youngest viewers,” these films should hold the attention of children 10 years and older.

SOM Honors Distinguished Alumni for Service to Church

The UD School of Ministry will recognize two alumni for their exemplary service to the local church through faith formation and ministry to the needy this month. Cecilia Rangel, a graduate of the four-year continuing education Catholic Biblical School program, will be honored with the Dei Verbum Award, and Kevin Harrington, who earned a master of theological studies in 1995, will receive the Lumen Gentium Award. Rangel (at right, in blue) was honored on Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. at St. Ann Catholic Parish in Coppell, Texas. Harrington was honored Jan. 18 at 11 a.m at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Pilot Point, Texas.

UD Names Longtime Chemistry Professor & Constantin Dean C.W. Eaker Provost

UD has named Charles “C.W.” Eaker provost and chief academic officer of the university. A nationally respected scholar and chemist, Eaker brings 10 years experience as dean of the Constantin College of Liberal Arts at the university and nearly 40 years experience at the University of Dallas to his new role. Eaker served as acting provost during fall 2014.

UD Designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity

The Satish & Yasmin Gupta College of Business at the University of Dallas continues to help combat these ever-increasing cybersecurity threats and has once again been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The accreditation, which the program first received in 2003, will cover academic years through 2021.

UD Partners with PAADS to Offer Leadership Training to Athlete Development Specialists

Wegemer Named 2015 King Fellow; Slaughter Named 2015 Haggar Fellow

Gerard Wegemer, professor of English, was named the 2015 King Fellow, and Stephen Slaughter, associate professor of biology and department chair, was named the 2015 Haggar Fellow during the University of Dallas King/Haggar and Haggerty Teaching Excellence Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

UD Hosts 2020 Women on Boards National Conversation on Board Diversity

Last November, more than 50 business leaders gathered on campus to discuss the presence of women in boardrooms across the country. Hosted by the Satish & Yasmin Gupta College of Business and sponsored by IMAGINE Well Inc., the 2020 Women on Boards organization brought their annual event National Conversation on Board Diversity to UD. The conversation around which the event is centered aims to increase the percentage of women on corporate boards to 20 percent by 2020. Currently, the percentage of women on the boards of Fortune 1000 companies is 17.7 percent.

UD to Celebrate St. Thomas Aquinas’ Feast with Lecture on Trinitarian Metaphysics

Professor Wayne J. Hankey, a well-known expert in medieval philosophy, Neoplatonism and contemporary Christian thought, will deliver the 33rd Annual Aquinas Lecture at UD on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. in Lynch Auditorium. Hankey, who serves as Carnegie Professor of Classics and Chair at Dalhousie University and King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia, will deliver a lecture titled “From Impassibility to Self-Affectivity: the Trinitarian Metaphysics of ‘Esse’ in Thomas’s ‘Summa theologiae.’” The lecture is free and open to the public.
