Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals

President Keefe Echoes Bishops’ Pledge to Support DACA Youth

UD Campus

Date Published: Sept. 7, 2017

Yesterday, President Thomas W. Keefe issued the following announcement to UD students in response to President Donald Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Dear University of Dallas students,

Tuesday, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that President Trump ordered the end to the DACA program, directing Congress to replace the policy with new legislation before it fully expires on March 5, 2018. I want to assure you that the university will continue to support all of our students. Should you have any concerns about your own status, please contact the Office of Student Affairs so we may address your concerns confidentially.

While this news is distressing, as a Catholic university we are called to look to our bishops for guidance and leadership regarding the issues that face our church, our communities, our nation, our environment and our world. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops recently issued a statement about the upcoming cancellation of the DACA program. Please take a moment to read this statement.

We stand with our bishops in urging our representatives to establish a just and legal resolution of the standing of these young people. We offer support and prayers for these youth, their families, friends and colleagues.

Sincerely yours,

President Keefe

Thomas W. Keefe
