The Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery proudly announces a new two-person exhibition, What Remains, featuring the work of artist educator Rachel Meginnes and Kelly O'Briant, assistant professor of ceramics, at the University of Dallas. Both artists will give a presentation on Thursday, Feb.1 at 5:30 p.m. in the Haggar Auditorium in the Art Village on the University of Dallas campus, followed by a reception in the gallery.
The exhibition What Remains is curated by Kathryn Gremley, Director of Penland Gallery and travels to us from the Penland School of Craft in North Carolina. The exhibition is available for viewing through Saturday, Mar. 3, 2018.
What Remains speaks to both visual and conceptual depth – of the inherent memory embedded in the works of Meginnes and O'Briant. For Meginnes, actual material, in the form of reclaimed textiles, forms the foundation of her process, a physical and metaphorical layering of wear and re-adapting, moving forward and revealing the past. In the work of O’Briant, the remainders are often phantom forms – a chimaera or abstraction of scientific theory. Her work in ceramics has explored the notions of dark matter, light and shadow, the passage of time. For this exhibition O’Briant mines the emotional effect of unsettlement and reconstruction – the physical act of carrying the past forward.
Both artists have spent time at Penland School of Craft. In 2015, Meginnes completed a three-year residency program and O'Briant was awarded a two-year core-fellowship in 2001. The Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery is proud to partner with the Penland School of Craft and Penland Gallery to bring this exhibition to The University of Dallas. We thank Curator Kathryn Gremley and her team for their assistance.
