Policies and Procedures - Employers

The Office of Personal Career Development at the University of Dallas has established guidelines to help facilitate the hiring process for all employers. If we can be of assistance in your recruiting efforts, please contact our office at 972-721-4135.

You are invited to participate in our recruiting programs and events if you are an employer with actual or anticipated bona fide entry-level positions and career-related paid internships. A bona fide position is defined as a career opportunity that is salaried (not 100% commission), and does not require the candidate to pay a fee for training or other job-related expenses. Graduate and professional school representatives may also schedule events to recruit University of Dallas students.


Employers that use Handshake will have access to candidate resumes and the personal information contained therein for recruiting, interviewing, and hiring purposes only with the explicit permission of the student. Handshake and University of Dallas are not responsible for what employers do with the personal information that is available or accessible on this site.

Privacy Policy

The University of Dallas Office of Personal Career Development provides access to Handshake. For details on their privacy practices, please review the Handshake Network Privacy Policy and the Direct Employers Privacy Policy. All privacy policies for our partners have been reviewed by OPCD.

Students and University of Dallas Career Development staff, with explicit permission of the student as it relates to the specific employer and/or opportunity,  may provide resumes and other relevant information to employers upon request (e.g., in response to a job posting). 

Posting Opportunities

Opportunities posted on Handshake may or may not be reviewed by the Office of Personal Career Development before posting. Users are urged to review the opportunities on a case by case basis and use caution and common sense before applying to any opportunity.  The Office of Personal Career Development strongly advises students to not disclose social security numbers, credit card information or bank account numbers to unknown employers.  The Office of Personal Career Development cannot be held responsible and/or liable for any damages, real or imagined, past, present or future, from the information contained in or requested by the opportunities posted on Handshake. Site users are urged to validate job postings and use caution and common sense when applying.

Fair Labor Standards Act

The University of Dallas highly recommends that employers follow the guidelines set by the Fair Labor Standards Act, especially with regard to internships. While the FLSA does not strictly forbid unpaid internships for for-profit companies, we encourage employers to pay their interns. Our experience has shown that employers tend to source stronger, more qualified candidates and a more equitable candidate pool when internship positions offer compensation.

Employers may offer academic course credit in lieu of compensation, however, the University of Dallas (as opposed to the employer) determines whether internships qualify for course credit. Students may not always be eligible to receive course credit for interning.

Second Round Interviews

Employers often schedule students for second round interviews the next day after their initial interviews. This practice does not provide any flexibility to the student, or offer any consideration for his/her previously scheduled commitments. Ideally, second round interviews should not be scheduled within three days of first round interviews/notification of your second round interviews. Students have classes, exams and other prior obligations that they cannot cancel on a moment's notice. Often, if they are unable to attend at your requested times, they feel that they will be eliminated from the pool of considered candidates.

We suggest that students not be immediately eliminated from the pool of second round candidates should they be unable to meet on the first requested date. Alternative options should be provided to students who cannot meet with you on the first scheduling attempt. Organizations that have been flexible with scheduling are often able to attract and attain the strongest candidates.

Job/Internship Offers

The University of Dallas Office of Personal Career Development believes that allowing candidates adequate time to make an informed decision whether or not to accept an offer is in the best interest of both candidates and employers. Candidates feel more secure in their choices after they have analyzed all the information available to them, and employers can feel more confident that candidates have accepted their offer with every intention of honoring their commitment.

OPCD recommends that employers provide University of Dallas students four weeks to decide on an offer or until the date below, whichever is later.

  • Employers extending full time offers as a result of a previous summer internship, and employers extending offers through the fall (including offers for summer 2022 start dates), are encouraged to provide students until November 15, 2021 (6 months prior to graduation) to decide.
The OPCD recruiting policy is informed by the Reasonable Offer Deadlines Guideline as set forth by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).  Updated March 2022.


We encourage employers to not serve alcohol as part of the recruitment process. Given the issues college campuses are having with alcohol use among students, serving alcohol at a reception can send the wrong message. Many college students are younger than the state's drinking age as well. Our concern is for your liability and the safety and welfare of our students, especially when attending an off-site event that would require students to drive back to campus in a safe manner.

Home Office Policy

Due to liability and risk management issues, the college does not endorse interns or job applicants into a home office or home training situation.

Employers are expected to be familiar with and to honor the Principles of Recruiting and Employment published by the National Association of College and Employers


Handshake uses industry standard technical, administrative and physical controls to protect your data including encrypting it at rest and as it is transferred from you to Handshake. While Handshake take reasonable precautions against possible security breaches, no website or internet transmission is completely secure and Handshake cannot guarantee that unauthorized access, hacking, data loss or other breach will never occur. In the event of a breach, we will take reasonable steps to investigate the situation and, where appropriate, notify affected individuals in accordance with any applicable laws and regulations.


Handshake are not affiliated with University of Dallas and therefore, University of Dallas cannot guarantee, nor does it otherwise accept responsibility for, any portion of this Statement that depends on Handshake's representations and its compliance with those representations.

Policies & Procedures - Students and Alumni

Student or Alumni Data: Handshake receives personal data about you when you create a Student or Alumni Account, update your profile, respond to questions or surveys on our website or otherwise use our Site, from our Partner Universities, and from other third party data sources.

From You, Your Account and Your Profile: You can choose to share additional information with us, such as an updated email address, phone number, work experience, resume and transcript, and answers to questions about your interests and activities that will be covered by this Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service. You can also share this information by updating your profile, uploading documents that include personal information, or answering questions or surveys (such as the First Destination Survey) we email you or present to you on the Services. We will not use your phone number to send any commercial or marketing messages to you.

The Office of Personal Career Development may access some of the job seeker's personal information in order to send email using communication tools on the site, to publish resumes in the school's resume books, and to send resumes to registered employers on behalf of the students/alumni.  Please see "Jobseeker Tips" about privacy on the Internet in general and is provided the World Privacy Foundation.
