Admissions to the Education Program
Formal admission to the Department is required for all students seeking Texas Teacher Certification and/or a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. This formal admission will typically occur during the student's Junior year. Those students who have baccalaureate degrees and wish to become certified also must apply as a Non Degree Seeking Student.
General admission requirements include:
1. An overall grade point average of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) and a 2.75 in pedagogical and teaching field courses.
2. Proficiency in each of the basic skills: reading, writing, math, critical thinking, and oral communication in English. A student can demonstrate proficiency by submitting a combination of passing scores on approved standardized tests, and successful performance on required University-administered writing/critical thinking assessment. The writing assessment is administered during the admission process. Approved standardized tests and minimum passing scores are:
a) THEA: English 230, Math 230, Writing 220
b) SAT: a combined score of 1070
c) ACT: Composite score of 23 with at least 19 in English and 19 in Math
3. Completion of required general education courses*:
6 hours in English (9-12 hours for EC-4)
3 hours in math, college algebra or above
3-4 hours of laboratory science
6 hours in American history (Secondary, 3 in American and 3 in other)
3 hours in American government.
*Students who have not completed all general education requirements may apply for conditional acceptance.
4. A completed application to the Department of Education Teacher Certification Program and essay.
5. A certification plan developed by the Department Certification Officer.
6. Recommendation by the Department of Education faculty.
7. Completed application as a Non-Degree Seeking Student if Post Baccalaureate.
