The University of Dallas will be the first college campus to house a convent of the
Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia, also known as the Nashville Dominicans.
Since the fall of 2016, the University of Dallas has been blessed by the presence
on its campus and in its classrooms of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia, also
known as the Nashville Dominicans. Founded in 1860, the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia are a vibrant and growing
order of religious sisters faithful to the church and dedicated to the apostolate
of Catholic education.
A Benefit to UD
The sisters are a tremendous benefit to the University of Dallas, where they teach
in the Philosophy and Theology Departments. Their presence as consecrated women is
also a source of inspiration, consolation and joy to all they come into contact with
in the wider Dallas/Fort Worth community. Over a dozen UD alumnae have joined the
order, and they administer and teach at Mary Immaculate Elementary School in Farmers
Branch.
Since moving to the Dallas area, they have lived in community at a home near the university’s
campus in Irving. Now, the University of Dallas is raising funds to build a home for
them on campus, becoming the first institution of higher learning in the country to
establish such a convent for the order. The fundraising goal for the project, which
must still proceed through architectural design, site preparation and construction,
is $7.2 million.
A Mission Convent
While the convent at UD would be the first on a university or college campus, it is
one of many ‘mission convents’ that the order has established to serve 53 different
schools in 31 dioceses both in the U.S. and abroad.
A convent on UD's campus would not only provide multiple opportunities for the sisters
to serve in both the classroom and in the formation of the students at UD, Mary Immaculate
and beyond, but also provide opportunities for the faithful of Dallas, both young
and old, but especially the young, to spend time on the campus of the University of
Dallas and to be inspired to deepen their love of Christ and commitment to His church.
