Funding for Further Studies in Classics

CAMWS Manson A. Stewart Undergraduate Award

This award of $1,000 is given to outstanding Classicists nominated by professors. Sophomores and juniors are eligible for nomination, but no institution may nominate more than two students per year. Nominations are due by January 6, and nominees must apply by January 30. Recipients of the award are expected to take at least two Latin or Greek courses during the following academic year. SCS Lionel Pearson Fellowship

This fellowships provides up to $27,000 for a year of study at an English or Scottish university. The Faculties of Classics of both Oxford and Cambridge Universities have generously offered to provide a tuition subvention for any Pearson Fellow enrolled at their institution. Those who have obtained a B.A. in Greek, Latin, Classics, or closely related fields at any American or Canadian university within the past year, as well as those who will obtain one during the coming academic year, are eligible to apply. Frank M. Snowden Jr. Undergraduate Scholarships 

This scholarship of up to $4,500 is intended for minority students participating in classical summer programs, field schools, modern or classical language programs, or other projects which deepen the student’s knowledge of classics or classical archaeology. More information on the application process and deadlines, as well as possible uses of the scholarship funding, can be found on the SCS website.

Eta Sigma Phi Scholarships

If you are a member of Eta Sigma Phi, consider applying for one of these generous scholarships during your junior and/or senior year. The application deadlines are typically in February. Please note also that you can continue to apply for these scholarships after you graduate from UD.

For Juniors & Seniors

R. Butts Summer Scholarship for Fieldwork in Archaeology

This scholarship of $2000 will be issued to recipients in the form of a reimbursement after proof of participation in archaeological fieldwork. Eta Sigma Phi members who will be rising juniors, seniors, or new graduates in the coming summer, as well as those who have completed their B.A. in the past eight years, are eligible to apply. The committee awards the scholarship on the basis of the applicant’s work in Greek, Latin, and related courses as well as his/her intention to continue in Classical studies and his/her contribution to the activities of Eta Sigma Phi at the local and national level. Preference is given to undergraduates and to those who have no experience in archaeological fieldwork. The application for this award is due in mid-February or early March. Theodore Bedrick Scholarship for the Vergilian Society at Cumae

This scholarship provides up to $2,900 to a student participating in one of the Vergilian Society’s Summer Sessions in Italy. Members of Eta Sigma Phi who will be rising juniors and seniors in the coming summer or who have received their B.A. within the last eight years but have not completed a doctoral program may apply. The application deadline is February 15, and winners will be announced at the beginning of April. The selection committee evaluates applicants based on the quality of their work in Greek and Latin, their intention to continue in classical studies, and their contribution to the activities of Eta Sigma Phi at the local and national level. For Seniors

Bernice L. Fox Latin Teacher Training Scholarship

This award of $750 is open to Eta Sigma Phi members who are now teaching or preparing to teach at the pre-collegiate level and who expect to receive their B.A. before the coming summer (or have received it in the last 10 years). The application deadline is February 15, and the award will support a summer activity contributing to the recipient’s preparation for teaching. Brent Malcolm Froberg Scholarship to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens

This scholarship of up to $3,300 is open to Eta Sigma Phi members who have received their B.A. in the last eight years (but have not completed a doctorate program) or who will have received it by June 1 of the present year. Eta Sigma Phi covers half of the program fee and the American School remits the other half. The application for this scholarship is due on February 15, but note that the application deadline for the American School is January 15. Scholarship recipients are announced in early April. The committee gives attention to the applicant’s quality of work in Greek and Latin, intention to continue in classical studies, and contribution to Eta Sigma Phi activities at the local and national level. Please visit Eta Sigma Phi's website for more information.

This scholarship of $3,575 is open to members of Eta Sigma Phi who have received their B.A. within the last eight years (but have not completed a doctoral program) and to those who will have received it by June 1 of the present year. The application deadline is February 15, and winners will be announced at the beginning of April. In reviewing applications, the committee gives attention to the applicant’s quality of work in Greek and Latin, intention to continue in classical studies, and contribution to the activities of Eta Sigma Phi at the local and national level. For Excavations and Field Schools

AIA Jane C. Waldbaum Archaeological Field School Scholarship

The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) awards many $1000 scholarships each year to help pay the expenses of an archaeological field program (minimum length one month/4 weeks). The application becomes available in December and is due in late February/early March. Current juniors, seniors, and first-year graduate students who are at least eighteen years old and have not previously participated in an archaeological project are eligible to apply. Both academic achievement and financial need are considered. Applications from minority and disadvantaged students are especially welcome. Two letters of recommendation are required. CAMWS Excavation/Field School Award

The Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) awards three $2,000 scholarships per year for participation in a summer excavation or field school at an archaeological site in the Greco-Roman world. Undergraduates, graduate students, and teachers are eligible to apply for these awards; typically, at least one of the scholarships is granted to an undergraduate and one to a graduate student. Applicants must be members of CAMWS (student membership costs $30). The application is due on January 30 each year. For more information, please visit the CAMWS website.

Etruscan Foundation Fieldwork Fellowship

This $2000 fellowship supports participation in field schools or archaeological fieldwork at Etruscan and Italic sites in non-Greek Italy. Applications are due in late February or early March and must be received via the United States Postal Service. All applicants must be members of the Etruscan Foundation (student membership costs $45).
