UDallas students outperform peers from Kenyon, Davidson, Purdue and other prestigious institutions at the Advanced International Latin Translation Exam
IRVING, Texas (April 23, 2026) — The University of Dallas Classics Department earned national recognition through the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) annual conference. Students from the graduate program as well as alumni from the undergraduate and graduate programs presented papers and the department received the CAMWS Promotional Activity Award for Antiquity Day, recognizing its outstanding efforts to promote classical languages and the legacy of the ancient world.
In addition, five undergraduates took top honors for the Advanced level of the International Latin Translation Exam (ILTE).
In the ILTE competition, UDallas competed against over 50 students from 11 other institutions, including Kenyon College, Davidson College, Texas Tech University, the University of Illinois, Purdue University and Case Western Reserve University.
Five University of Dallas undergraduates placed among the top competitors:
- Cash Awards (highest distinction): Amanda Beaver, Classical Philology, Latin, '28; Ben Olster, Classical Philology, Greek and Latin, '28; and Bethany Kaufman, Classical Philology, Greek and Latin, '27.
- Book Award: Martin Lane, Classical Philology, Greek and Latin, '28.
- Certificate of Commendation: Pia Baxter, Classical Philology, Latin and English, '29.
Amanda Beaver, Ben Olster and Bethany Kaufman were among only six students nationally
to earn Cash Awards, the exam's highest distinction.
"This recognition reflects the excellence of our students and the dedicated faculty
of our Classics program," said Teresa Danze, PhD, associate professor and chair of the UDallas Classics Department. "Competing
against larger institutions with long-established programs, UD students demonstrated
that our rigorous classical education, modest in scale, ranks among the best."
