Awards and Scholarships
The English Department regularly gives five awards to English students. These awards are merit-based awards and a scholarship based on specific work done in English courses. The five awards are:
- The Sister Frances Marie Manning, S.S.M.N. Award for Excellence in Literary Study - recognizes the achievement of a graduating senior whose work and whose presence as a member of their class has been consistently outstanding.
- The Dr. Katherine Maren Sorensen Award for Excellence in the Study of the Novel - recognizes one student in the Literary Study II: Prose Fiction course whose presentation reveals him or her to be a superior reader of the novel.
- The Christine S. Kiegerl Memorial Scholarship - awarded annually to a rising senior English major for demonstrated excellence in the field of language and literature.
- The Dr. Raymond D. DiLorenzo Essay Contest - an annual competition in which professors nominate the best essay from their Spring Literary Traditions II (Dante and Milton) course.
- The Dr. Dona S. Gower Memorial Endowed Scholarship - The Athena Foundation has chosen to create an endowed scholarship to benefit an undergraduate rising senior English Major at the Constantin College.
- The Marilyn Lendvay Short Story Award - an annual award in which professors nominate the best short story from the Literary Tradition IV course .
